Indulge in Klein Karoo wines

The Klein Karoo Wine Route in the Southern Cape is arguably the most diverse of South Africa’s wine regions. It is the easternmost wine producing region in the country, stretching along the Cape Route 62 from Montagu in the west to the Outeniqua in the east. The Klein Karoo is situated between spectacular mountain ranges, and its vines are mostly grown on the high slopes in the fertile alluvial soil along the riverbanks. The climate is generally drier than that of the other wine regions, resulting in healthy vineyards which are grown organically to a large extent.

World class Cape Port-Style wines and South Africa’s champion Muscadel are specialties among the fortified wines produced here, along with a host of outstanding red and white wines, which vary from full-bodied Shiraz to lighter styles for easy drinking. Dry wines produced from traditional Portuguese cultivars are unique to Calitzdorp, contributing to the sought-after Calitzdorp blend.

More than just an excellent range of wines, the Klein Karoo Wine Route offers visitors its unique cuisine, the warmth and hospitality of its people, and the mystique of its landscape. The Klein Karoo Wine Route invites you to toast their variety!

Excelsior Vlakteplaas

Wines available at the Doornkraal Farm Stall on the R341 near De Rust

Approximately 55 km from Oudtshoorn, as you drive along the Willomore road northwards, you will find Excelsior Winery on Vlakteplaas. For 150 years the farm has been in the Schoeman family and grapes are being farmed here since 1930. This proud tradition has been maintained by his son, Jurie and grandson, Danie, who still today, produce a variety of wines, especially Muscadel wines in the original cellar that has been partly modernized.

The good quality of the wines are owing to the calcium-rich soil and the fresh mountain water from the Swartberg mountains, while the warm, dry climate of the Klein Karoo enhances the growth of healthy full-ripe grapes.

Domein Doornkraal

Domaein Doornkraal is situated in the shadow of the Swartberg mountains in the Karoo. The Le Roux family has been in the farming business for generations.

The estates basic philosophy is that wine is a gift from God that enhances life. Which means that wine was made for man and not the other way around. Make your way to this farm stall and wine tasting venue for a taste sensation.

Wine maker Piet le Roux has 22 hectares to use to create the splendid wine. Their range includes a sparkling wine called Tickled Pink, a variety of whites including Kuierwyn and Semillon, delicious reds and a number of fortified wine.
